Bindi is one of the great pinot noir producers of Australia and has for some time cemented itself as the greatest of the Macedon Ranges wineries. In more recent times Michael Dhillion has expanded beyond the home vineyard, sourcing quality fruit from nearby sites and Southern Heathcote to build out quality wines under the 'Dhillion' and 'Pyrette' labels.
"The Bindi farm spans 170ha but only 7ha is planted to vines. This simple fact is an insight into the care and respect the Dhillon family has for its land, its heritage and its future. There are only 2 varieties planted (pinot noir and chardonnay) on the home vineyard, both long-established for their stellar quality. Bindi is without question among a select few at the top echelon of Australian wine and essentially has been ever since its '88 plantings first hit their straps. While quality is the uniting factor across the entire range, Block 5 pinot noir remains the resounding jewel in Bindi's crown. Of genuine excitement is the addition of high-density pinot noir (11,300 vines/ha, planted in ’14 and ’16), which is destined to add yet more lustre." Halliday Wine Companion
"Er, good news and bad news. As to the former, this is an exceptional Block 5. The bad news? It won’t be released until May 2025. Pop it in your calendar and count down the days. Its release also coincides with Block 8 and Darshan 2020s and ‘22s. Don’t be confused. Just remember the facts. Truth is, Block 5 is gorgeous in its youth but does build more depth in time – as in five or so years. Take a deep breath to smell the roses, red/black cherries with pips and blood orange plus exotic spices. Fuller bodied and draped with exquisitely shaped, velvety fine tannins and lithe acidity ensuring the finish lingers long. Worth the wait." 98pts | Jane Faulkner | Halliday Wine Companion
"Good depth of ruby red with a tinge of purple in the rim; there are subtle maraschino cherry and loamy aromas, the merest hint of whole-bunch spice, while the palate is medium-full weighted and slightly reserved at this early age, with fine, powdery tannins in easy balance with the body of the wine. A more strongly structured pinot. There is more in store if this wine is cellared for at least another year." 97pts | Huon Hooke | The Real Review
